‘Abide With Me’ was written by Henry Francis Lyte in 1847. Lyte was inspired to write this hymn as he was dying of tuberculosis. He finished it on the Sunday he gave his farewell sermon to his parish. The next day he left for Italy to try and regain his health but he died in France three weeks later. Every day the bells at All Saints Church in Lower Brixham Devon ring out 'Abide With Me'.
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide;
When other Helpers fail and comforts flee;
Help of the helpless, Oh abide with me
